Abstract
The measurement of blood pressure in the clinic using a sphyngomanometer had been used as a standard in evaluating the effect of antihypertensive agents. Recently, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was introduced and it has several
advandageous
aspects compared with the measurement of blood pressure in the clinic. We compared these 2 methods in evaluating the antihypertensive effect of imidapril-a new long acting angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor.
Three men and seven women were recruited. Their mean age was 54 years old. Imidapril was given for 3 months. Their blood pressure was measured by 2 methods, before and after medication, and Spacelab 90202 and 90207(Spacelab, U.S.A.) were used for
ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
We found there are considerable differences between clinic blood pressure and ambulatory blood pressure, particulary in the night time. We concluded that ambulatory blood pressure monitoring should be used more widely in evaluating the effect of
antihypertensive agents, particulary in the nigh time.
